Narrator : “Dog behavioural expert Cesar Millan has been called to
Newcastle, England to assist Kevin Keegan with his unruly bitch, Joey.
His first task is to get the human side of the story from Kevin :”
CM : So Kevin, tell me about Joey.
KK : Well, we picked him up as a Rescue job back in June. He was
quarantined in Thailand after hitting a fan, and had disciplinary
problems as long as your arm. It all culminated in an attack on Ousmane
Dabo where he actually drew blood. His owners wanted to have him put
down. But Sam just, you know, thought he could work with him. Anyway, he
got loose in Liverpool in December, ran amok in a MacDonalds, attached
several passers by, and ended up in the kennels for weeks. By the time I
picked up the lead in January he was already looking like a lost cause.
CM : I notice you let him sit on your lap. {winces}
KK : Yeah, you gotta love the little fella.
CM : No, that's not good. Right now he's disrespecting you. He's giving
off excited / dominant energy, when you really need to get him into a
calm / submissive state. He's waving his balls in your face like he owns
you.
KK : Oh, don't do that Cesar, don't move him – he doesn't like that.
He's growling.
CM : There? See that? He just went from Level 3 to Red Zone in an
instant. How do you correct him when he snaps like that.
KK : Well, I normally make kissy noises and give him a boneo treat size
until he calms down.
CM : No no no no NO. You are supposed to be pack leader and you're
acting like his bitch. You give him a quick slap like this {slap} just
to distract him, make him sit, and keep correcting him at the very first
sign of trouble.
KK : Oh, he's calm now. How do you do that?
CM : You just gotta be calm / dominant and he'll pick up on that energy.
You're giving off a "Hey, I'm everyone's friend" kind of energy which is
no good for a problem dog like Joey.
KK : So maybe if I was a little less pally with him I could get his
respect? Great, so do you think he can play on Saturday?
CM : Sure, just make sure you walk out of the tunnel first. That way
you're owning the stadium see, and he is following you into your domain
with your permission.
KK : Cool. So as soon as he gets to Level I just give him a slap and
stare him down. It all makes sense now.
CM : Yes, and don't scratch his belly or pet him until he's calm /
submissive.
Narrator : “As in so many cases Cesar has been able to turn a red zone
dog into an obedient pack follower. As always, he has rehabilitated the
dog and trained the owner. No animals were harmed in the filming of this
programme.”
