After the breathtaking European Cup win we might have thought the
all-conquering glory days of Keegan, Dalglish & Rush were returning to
Anfield.
These were false hopes underlined by a slaughtering by chelsea and even
more humiliating defeats by lowly fulham and crystal palace.
Surely a european cup winning manager is unsackable but what the hell
will it take to get these massively overpaid primadonas to perform
somewhere remotely near the standards set by their predecessors of the
70s and 80s?

Why anybody would think that after bearing witness to Rafael Benitez's
mediocrity as Liverpool coach last season is beyond me.
Liverpool last year simply matched up well Vs Chelsea in Europe over
both legs and I was not surprised at all when they eliminated them. As
for Milan, it was down to a fair ammount of luck and the pivotal entry
of Hamman to take over Gerrard's midfield duties.
When you have a coach that denigrates a great talent like Djibril
Cissé and signs players like Crouch, Zenden, Nunez, etc and prefers
Gerrard over Hamman to play alongside Xabi Alonso, his insistence on
playing Garcia as a 2nd striker rather than winger, the lack of quality
of Traore, the extremelly overrated Gerrard, the mildly overrated
tandem of Hyppia and Carragher, etc I really don't think there's any
question as to the man's incompetence.
Liverpool were never competitive in the EPL last season, why would you
expect a magical turn around? I said last year that despite Chelsea'
form they would continue to improve much like Porto under Mourinho
after 30 months were still an improving team much like Chelsea is now.

Where are the wingers? Benitez often fields 4 full-backs in Finnan and
Josemi on the right and Warnock and Riise on the left and seriously
other than Riise none of them knows how to attack.

That's what I as a non-Liverpool supporter have been banking on for the
last 5 months.
but what the hell

For one they don't have their talent, 2nd Bebnitez plays defensive
football and in order not to suffer goals you have to have your
forwards pressure the adversary rather than just let them play at will
and bring the fight to your doorstep.
Liverpool can field a very interesting XI IMHO, one who can definitely
be a 3rd place finisher in the EPL if they had a better manager.
I hope Liverpool fans will remain enamored with their CL winning
manager and continue their deification of Steven Gerrard, it's the best
sand they can possibly throw in their own eyes.

True, they did win the Champions League. How? No idea, they were
totally outclassed for 45 minutes but they battled away & got a
result. This still doesn’t match Man Utd who were outplayed for 89
minutes against Bayern Munich & blagged an even more underserved win.
Due to the early start of Liverpool’s season, its almost like
Benitas is obsessed with squad rotation to try & keep his players
fresh but it isn’t working imho, not forgetting some injuries on the
way haven’t helped. I’m also not convinced that players are playing
in the right positions & some simply aren’t good enough.
