OK the title is a little misleading as the CD I am listening to isn't
old, I only bought it the other day, the music is however 20 years old
yet it stands up remarkably well. It's only the occasional guitar riff
that would probably tell you that this wasn't a modern production that
and the fact you've all probably owned a copy, probably on compact
cassette or at least listened to it before. I say all but obviously I
don't include Kullrad in that. Whatever happened to that happy little
chappy?
Anyway back to the thread, I thought it might be a good idea, as you all
like music (except Kully) if you posted about an old CD/Cassette/LP
you've been listening to recently & told the froup why this album has
recently got you hooked again, or perhaps you just stuck it on and
listened to it once but where blown away.
I probably haven't heard this album since about 1989 or possibly even
1988 and back then I can't say I appreciated it. Perhaps it's a sign
that as we get older we start to appreciate the finer things in life, if
so then I really don't mind getting old.
I guess I should stop rambling and talk about the music or maybe less
about the actual composition and more about what this album makes me
feel or think.
Without further ado;
Artist - Tracy Chapman
Album - Tracy Chapman
1. Talkin' bout a revolution.
Easily for me the finest track on the album and possibly one of the
finest tracks ever produced. Just a shame it was only 2 minutes 38
seconds long. It's also a track that I feel has probably more meaning
today then it did 20 years ago.
2. Fast Car.
The signature track on the album and it's easy to see how it catapulted
her into stardom. For me it's about escape and how we all long for it.
3. Across the lines.
The lines that still exist and are probably are even more pronounced
now, though just amongst different groups of people.
4. Behind the wall.
One of those ills of society that will probably never disappear. Not
many people could write a track about wife beating and make you picture
the scene and feel like a helpless bystander.
5. Baby can I hold you.
Simply a beautiful track. One that makes me think of those times the
song is about and how human we all are.
6. Mountain o' things.
A track about that 80's most coveted of things. Materialism. So many
have what they covet but it's only to hide what they really want.
7. She's got her ticket.
Tracy certainly wanted to escape from something as the 2nd track on her
album that is about running away and starting a new.
8. Why?
So many questions and 20 years later none of them answered.
9. For my lover.
What simply won't we do for the one we love? What I'd call Chapmans
first love song on the album but one with probaby more feeling then the
syrup that we hear many others produce.
10. If not now.
Commitment. I guess that one word sums up it up.
11. For you.
This song can't but help make me think of unrequited love and how
sometimes we can't show those feelings.
Overall I am going to have to give this album a resounding 9.2/12 even
though after listening to it you feel compelled to put something lively
on as it is so full of raw emotion.
