"I remember exactly what happened and I knew exactly what I had to do.
I was on the ice and I knew it was pretty bad ... I knew I had to get
up and get to the bench as soon as possible. Then when I was there it
was like, well, it’s up to [the trainers] now," said Zednik during a
media conference Thursday in Sunrise, Fla.
The 32-year-old spoke for the first time since the frightening
incident on Feb. 10 when the Panthers were playing in Buffalo against
the Sabres.
During the third period of the game at the HSBC Arena, teammate Olli
Jokinen was upended by Buffalo defenceman Brian Campbell. As Zednik
skated past, Jokinen’s skate sliced into his neck and severed Zednik’s
right carotid artery.
Zednik lost five pints of blood, but never lost consciousness. Doctors
say, because of quick treatment, Zednik’s life was never in danger.
