Le Dieu the thick Manc twat says that if I -- a Liverpool fan -- asked any
honest football fan who the most successful sides in the world right now are
he'd reply Real Madrid and Manchester Utd. I can accept Real Madrid but as
for Utd I think Le Dieu is living in cloud cuckoo land. Check Utd's record
in Europe against all the top sides -- they come out of it looking like the
novices they are. But hey -- you tell me whether Le Dieu is right. You're
the honest footie fans. Be honest -- that's all I ask. Thanks.

I don't know if I'm honest enough, Pompy...but, for a kick off, neither the
sides in this discussion are the 'present' Champions League Champions.
It's too difficult to get a definitive answer.

I agree with you Pope. Although they are obviously far more successful
recently than any other English team, they are not one of the most
successful sides in the Champions league. Reaching the knockout stages
doesn't mean success. It just means you lost. Which isn't success is it?
United don't often make it past the quarter finals. That's not particularly
impressive, when you compare them to teams like Bayern Munich, Valencia and
Real Madrid. |

You've asked for honesty, I'll give honesty.
Real are the obvious answer for number one. They've won the most competetive
and difficult domestic league in europe an impressive number of times in
recent seasons, not to mention the number of Champs Leagues they have won.
The second 'spot' is tougher to call, and I'd condede that Le Dieu has a
valid argument in putting forward Man Ure for the allocade.
Their domestic form cannot be questioned at this stage. Plus they have a
very 'consistant' at least, Champs League record. They've reached at least
the quarters in recent season, have won it once not so long ago, and have a
couple of semi spots as well. If we're honest, Lally, not many teams can
compete with the 'relative' euro success that Man Ure can boast of in recent
years ....
However ... I would nominate Bayern as the second most successful side, as
their domestic record is just as good as Man Ure's and if you ignore their
failure in last season's CL, their CL record in recent years is better than
Man Ure's.
The other aspect to consider is that most of us can't say much about teams
outside of europe and there could easily be worthy candidates (for best
teams in the world) from South America.
But IMO, which is what you asked for, I agree with you, in that Man Ure are
not one of the two most successful teams in the world right now, as I feel
Bayern deserve the 2nd spot .... but in LD's defence, Man Ure have at least
been consistantly strong in the CL which not many other clubs in europe can
claim to be. However it has been shown that Man Ure are consistantly not
strong *enough* to be the best in recent years though.
Real and Bayern for me.

Les D has a point. As measured by the champions league, they ain't even the
2 most successful sides in Europe right now. |

Yes. He is right. I see successful sides, and there has to be
'one' English side listed. Therefore Utd. as the most successful
English side over the last 10 years, and Real Madrid the most
successful Spanish side over the last 10 years are the two I
would plump for.
There would also be the German sides such as Bayern. Although
Germany has seen the likes of Leverkusen and Dortmund have good
seasons both domestically and in Europe. This is why United
would be above them in the pecking order.
Italian football. There are some great names like Juve, AC
Milan, Inter, Roma etc. etc. They have shown little in the way
of consistency over the last 10 years though. Again Utd. would
come above these.
Dutch, French and Portugese Football all have decent teams, but
again consistency is a problem for them. Possibly Ajax or Porto
would be the two teams out of this section. There is no way you
could say any of these sides fit the bill.
Other European Club Sides. I'm thinking of Galatasarey,
Olimpiakos, Panathanaikos, Fenerbahce, Partizan Belgrade, Hajduk
Split etc etc are just not good enough. These teams are either
on a downward curve, or on an upward curve. Greek and Turkish
football for instance, may become a greater force in European
football in future seasons. They are doing well. While the old
Yugoslavian states sides are on the slide for obvious reasons.
Any way, to round it off. The two most successful European clubs
over the last 10 years must be Real Madrid and Manchester
United.
Is that honest enough for you?

Careful Moog! All the Kopites will be calling you a Man United lover for
this. What will they do when United overtake their trophy haul? No more
18-4s etc, they'll have nothing to fall back on

I think we can draw a successful tennis analogy here:-
REAL MADRID = Bjorn Bjorg (sp) entertaining and highly successful whilst
overseas
MAN UTD = Tim Henman, everyone supports them but ultimately, they haven't
got the bottle.

They would be completely wrong, and not for the first bloody
time. I'm an Evertonian who answered a question honestly. Like I
was asked to do.

Beat Juve home and away, beat Bayern Munich, beat Real Madrid ... etc, etc
I'm tired of defending United's European record. It stands for itself. Some
people are saying that a team as good as United should have won it more
often. This is a back-handed compliment. Real Madrid, the best team in the
history of club football went for 32 years without winning it. I think
United can survive a while yet without adding to our haul. I just hope for
more nights like Real at home when the team restored our pride.
If we never win it again I'll always have the memory of seeing my team lift
the European cup on a not night in Barcelona.
And after we've won it another four or five times I hope you live to see
Liverpool do the same.
Pope, forget about United. None of us can change the past. Just try and
enjoy whatever Liverpool have in store for you next season.

Disagree with that, Moog. If you take the last 5 years, Bayern have won 4
Bundesliga titles, and Won the CL once, appeared in another Final, 1 semi,
and 1 quarter.
Man Ure have also won 4 domestic titles, Won the CL once, but only have a
semi and 3 quarters, so if you cancel out the shared achievements, you have
Bayern's 'Final appearance' versus 2 'Quarter appearances' which arguably
gives the german club the edge. And with Leverkusen, Dortmund showing
stronger in the CL than say Arsenal Newcastle Chelsea etc, it could also be
argued that Bayern's domestic titles are more impressive than Man Ure's.

Yep, the Italian sides are only started to show again in the last year or
so, after being in the CL wilderness for the last few years.

It could be argued that Porto are currently the most succesful european club
due to their domestic double and Uefa cup win, but the level of competition
in comparision with say La Liga and the CL, means you can't really consider
them here. Ajax have only just started to revive after a number of years
where they couldn't even win their own domestic title (which they conceded
again this year). So yeah, there currently isn't a team from those nations
worthy of consideration.

I'd go along with that. Although I'll also add, that I miss seeing those
eastern block sides come into european competition with a team of unknowns
with unpronounceable names (usually stars of the future), and the surprise
of how well they would perform.
Anyhoo, still Real and Bayern for me, but yeah, Man Ure are up there as
well.

Phil. A good post mate. It certainly has me thinking. With such
a reasonable and well thought out response, I'd now put Bayonet
Manflick on a par with Muckchester Uni-'ted'
I suppose it all depends on how you see the Bundesliga versus
the Premiership at the end of the day. I'd still say that the
Premiership was the harder of the two leagues to win. I know
it's guesswork, but you've got to be jingoistic about it
Therefore my first thoughts still stand. Although now it *is* a
lot closer than before.

Can't argue with that, as Man Ure are just off the pace in my own thinking
as well.

Starting from 1993 now instead of 1992, that's nice of you.Try starting from
1956 when Euro football started or even 1888 when league football started.
Now who comes out on top , top 3 or even top 10 ?
